GP practice 'GMS' and 'PMS' contracts were amended in 2005 to ban the use of 087 and 09 numbers. The ban was extended in England and Wales in April 2010 to cover 084 numbers and any other numbers where the caller pays more than when calling an 01, 02 or 03 number. The deadline for compliance was April 2011.

Other NHS bodies are covered by directions published by the Department of Health in 2005 and December 2009.
